Suggestions on Surviving.
A few of us in our community decided this spring to get our own community prepared. It came after a gust of wind took down a tree which fell on a telephone poll which had a domino effect and took down over 20 polls over the main road. At the same time the Union in charge of the electrical for the City decided what a good time to walk off the job on strike. We were without power for four long days. Within two weeks the Tsunami in Japan with the threat to Hawaii made us think we aren’t really ready for a crisis.
We knew we couldn’t depend on the government being there for us. We know that we have to be a community and pull together. We want to not only get our neighbors and community to have food for their families but first aid training, search and rescue, to having our own water filter that’s our own system here and the skills to get through even a long term crisis whatever that may be.
Our group started with just a few people and just a few months we had moved large strides forward. We held our first community meeting for basic information in the first weeks after the Tsunami and had 400 in attendance. In just 5 months we held our first Emergency Preparedness Fair and had over 1000 community members in attendance and have filled three classes of first aid training with classes already filling up for more. We raised dollars from the community for the event and offered the event no charge so anyone could come. This will be an annual event and starting monthly/quarterly training and educational classes.

If any of you would like helpful information on getting your own community involved we’ll be glad to help. It would be great if communities were crisis ready all over the country.
That’s a great idea. I would love your input on creating a list on Community Survival items that you used. We could use that as a model and I suspect given the current climate in the US we could hopefully start a pay it forward chain of connected groups. Thanks for the info HulaGirl.
#1 is first getting the community aware and participating and aware. We live in an aware community because we have monthly warning tests that we hear but most communities just let life go by.
If you live in a large city then start in your immediate community as most cities are into districts. If you are a town then get your town leaders involved. If the town leaders don’t want any part of it then find those people that do want to be involved. This isn’t about politics nor should it be. It should be about readiness of a community in any crisis.
#2 Do use the help of your first responders and work with them not against them. If you have them on your side and being proactive with them you’ll not only save a lot more lives but also less butting of heads.
On our committee we asked our government offices like Tsunami ready or Emergency Preparedness offices like FEMA to join us. We know they can’t be every where in a crisis but we also know we need their help in free training.
Take advantage of the Free C.E.R.T. training that is available to all. CERT is: Community Emergency Response Training. Not only is the program free in most cases but the training comes with a backpack full of emergency readiness goodies that every attendee gets. Over $100 dollars worth of goods. http://www.citizencorps.gov/cert/training_mat.shtm
Utilize the http://www.Ready.gov website. There is a lot of good information there and it is a website that you can download prep lists from.
Add to those lists for your own area.
Come up with a Website for your community or use the Free Blog sites that the community can get information from and save you tons on stamps for upcoming events. If you don’t know how then get the easy to read Blogspot for Dummy’s book and it’s easy to follow or even use Youtube free.
Once you’ve formed a committee you will need to form a Non Profit Organization. There are organizations that give grants just to help you form a non profit for emergency preparedness.
Once you are a non profit then you can start getting donations such as from a business that wants to help start getting the community prepared.
If you want to do a Preparedness Fair ask those businesses like Home Depot (at the Corporate level) or your local hardware store that may carry supplies for emergencies.
We were chosen by Target to be one in the country whereby they distributed 350 First Aid Kits for the first ones in the door. The kits were nice. We placed their booth a the back of the auditorium with lots of room so that people actually came through the show before getting any free item. That way we didn’t have those that only came for the free stuff and left.
Utilize all the free training from the American Red Cross and the Heart Association.
Don’t forget about your pets. Not only does the Heart Association show CPR on people but also on pets.
Invite the local humane society or pet rescue centers too.
Identify Shelters and get that information out to the public. Aim to get city signs posted so persons passing through town when an emergency occurs knows where a shelter may be located so they can also seek help.
Utilized your local H.A.M. Radio clubs and have their participation. When phones and cell towers go down they are a form of communication that can get the word out fast.
Have committee officers have Walkies talkies for emergencies get the kind that can go without electricity or have chargers for generators.
Aim to buy a personal or community water filter system. If you do fundraisers for them you can have the system designed for your community and what your needs are. Systems like First Water (see link) http://firstwaterinc.com/usa can take the dirtiest of water and make it drinkable in minutes. Think of having one that you can drop in the nearest pond or even the golf course pond and get drinkable water for your community. When City Water is down this can be your life savor.
Start finding out in your community who knows how to can food and hold classes once in awhile.
Find those that know about your local native plants and their healing properties. Medicines may not be available and it’s sickness and disease that can kill many or even a pandemic.
Utilized things like Colloidal Silver where it can not only be used for internal use to kill the hardest of bacterias even those many common drugs can’t kill but also used on surfaces to keep clean so you can help kill Staph Infections Like MRSA and VRE that are the super bugs that kills over 100,000 in our hospitals alone each and every year.
I don’t wait for a crisis with Colloidal Silver we make our own for use to help with cold and flu season…even on cuts for us and our pets. Great for killing mange or skin rashes on animals. It alone can be a life savor. Have small rods of pure silver (we get ours at our local bead store). Don’t use sterling silver for internal use..only external use. Use only pure silver. Colloidal Silver is a natural Antibiotic and one that has been used for centuries. It was replaced by modern drugs and yet Colloidal Silver kills many more germs and viruses. We have both a small electric and a battery colloidal machine in our go packs.
I hope you too will look into having readiness group help your community get ready for all types of disasters.
